Chapter 39
Caspar’s POV:
I tried to gently pull away, but her embrace only tightened.
“Shit, I muttered under my breath, attempting to take deep breaths to steady myself.
The entire car ride was pure torture for me.
Every time the car took a turn, her body would sway gently, settling against me in an even more intimate position.
I tried like hell to focus on the scenery flying past the window, but her soft breathing and that subtle fragrance she wore kept assaulting my senses.
When the car finally pulled through the gates of Thornton Manor, I breathed a sigh of relief.
I carefully unwrapped her arms from around my waist and quickly slid toward the car door.
“Sir, shall I have the housekeeper attend to Miss
Lane
Edward waited by the car door, a knowing look flickering in his
eyes as he took in Audrey’s condition.
“No, I’ll handle it,” I heard myself say.
I bent down and lifted Audrey from the car. She was surprisingly light, her body soft against my chest.
I could smell the faint fragrance in her hair, mixed with the scent of alcohol– a combination that inexplicably left me feeling unsettled.
I carried her in long strides toward the guest room, Edward followin
close behind.
“Have the housekeeper prepare some sleepwear,” I commanded,
“Yes, sir p>
paused, “If there’s nothing suitable, use one of my shirts p>
I gently placed Audrey on the guest room’s king–sized bed, her hair fanning out across the white pillows like golden–brown waves.
Her cheeks were flushed from the alcohol, and her eyelashes cast delicate shadows in the lamplight.
As I prepared to leave, I noticed a single tear sliding down from the corner of her eye.
“Don’t go…” she murmured in her sleep, her voice barely audible, “Don’t abandon me…baby p>
My hand instinctively reached toward her face, but stopped just before making contact.
This woman who was usually as strong as a fortress looked so fragile in this moment.
When the housekeeper entered, I stepped aside.
Just then, I noticed Noah standing in the doorway, his small figure radiating worry, his large eyes fixed on Audrey lying on the bed.

“Noah, I said softly, walking toward him and crouching down to meet his eye level, ‘Don’t worry, Miss Audrey is just tired and needs some rest.
Noah’s eyes remained glued to Audrey, his small hands clenched into fists.
He shook his head and took a small step forward, clearly indicating he wanted to stay by Audrey’s side.
“Hey, buddy, I gently gripped his shoulder, gentlemen don’t stay when a lady needs privacy. Miss Audrey needs rest and space p>
Noah stood his ground stubbornly, his gaze filled with determination not to leave.
“Besides,” I lowered my voice as if sharing a secret, “if you don’t get to bed now, you’ll have panda eyes tomorrow morning. Miss Audrey would be upset if she saw that–you know how much she cares about your health p>
Noah blinked, seeming to consider my words.
Finally, he reluctantly nodded and turned to leave.
I breathed a sigh of relief. Sometimes it felt like I was the third wheel in Noah and Audrey’s relationship.

Just as I turned to leave, her hand suddenly grabbed

I tried to pull away, but her fingers gripped my wrist with surprising strength. I sighed and sat down on the edge of the bed.
Only when her breathing gradually steadied did I gently pry her fingers loose.
“What’s got you so torn up?” I asked quietly, knowing I would

I took one last look at her, then tiptoed out of the room, gently closing the door behind me.
Walking to the end of the hallway, I pulled out my phone and dialed James’s number.
“James,” I said quietly into the phone, “I need you to dig up everything on someone named ‘Finley–especially his connection to Audrey Lane p>
“Yes, sir p>
I ended the call and stood there for a moment, staring back at the closed door. The image of her tear–stained face and those whispered words about abandonment kept replaying in my mind.
What the hell was I getting myself into?
I loosened my tie and headed toward my own room, but sleep felt like the last thing that would come easily tonight.
