Chapter 131

ALEXANDER

She came at me with another jab, sloppy in her form but surprisingly quick, and I had to block harder. My eyebrows shot up before I could stop them.

“Not bad,” I muttered, circling her.

She grinned, breathless but proud. “I told you…I’m not just a pretty face p>

I smirked. “Pretty face, reckless temper, no technique p>

Her eyes narrowed, and before I could finish my thought, she faked left and actually managed to land a light hit to my side. I froze for a split second. She froze too, clearly shocked she’d gotten through my guard.

And then she laughed.

It was the kind of laugh that filled the room and did things to me I had no defense against. I tried to scowl, but the sound of it tugged a reluctant smile out of me.

“Lucky shot,” I said.

“Skill,” she shot back, still laughing.

I lunged at her…not with a punch, but with a sudden rush forward that had her squealing and trying to dodge. She wasn’t fast enough. I caught her wrists, pinning them easily.

“You call that skill?” I asked, leaning in, my breath brushing against her ear.

Her chest rose and fell against mine, and the playful spark in her eyes shifted into something else, something hotter, deeper. The gloves hung useless now between us, and all I could think about was how close her lips were.

She tilted her head, lips curving into the faintest challenge. “Maybe you should try me again p>

That was all it took.

I dropped the gloves from her wrists, but I didn’t step back. Instead, my hands slid to her waist, pulling her against me fully. Her laughter melted into a soft gasp as I claimed her lips, and whatever frustration, anger, or weight I had carried from my trip to my mother’s–all of it burned away in the heat of her kiss.

She kissed me back with the same fire she had been throwing punches with, fierce and unyielding, and for once, I let myself forget everything else. Forget Marcus, forget politics,

forget the pack. There was just her–her warmth, her taste, her body pressed against mine like she belonged nowhere else.

When I finally broke the kiss, it wasn’t because I wanted to. It was because I knew she

needed air. She was smiling, flushed and radiant, and I swear she had never looked more dangerous to my sanity.

“You’re still not going easy on me,” she whispered.

I chuckled, tucking her hair behind her ear. “Trust me, I am p>

I was about to kiss her again when the door opened.

“Alpha,” a voice said, hesitant.

I froze, every muscle in me snapping tight as reality came crashing back. Slowly, I turned my head to see one of my men standing awkwardly at the door, clearly wishing he had come at a better time.

“Some people are waiting for you in the office,” he explained quickly. “They said it’s… important p>

I closed my eyes for a second, jaw tightening. I didn’t even have to ask who they were- council, warriors, politics, always something. Always someone waiting.

When I opened my eyes again, Faye was biting her lip, fighting hard not to laugh. Her shoulders shook with the effort.

I narrowed my eyes at her, muttering, “Don’t p>

She only grinned wider.

In that moment..sweaty, half–dressed, interrupted…I honestly questioned whether being Alpha was worth it.

FAYE

I had barely finished freshening up from my little spar with Alexander when a knock sounded on my door. I dried my hands quickly and went to open it. Irene stood there, leaning against

the frame with her usual casualness.

“Someone’s here to see you,” she said, stepping aside.

Before I could even ask who, another figure appeared behind her. Helen. She was smiling so brightly it almost blinded me.

1 froze, caught completely off guard. The last person I expected to see today was her. Before I could find words, she pulled me into a hug. My arms automatically went around her, and despite my shock, I found myself smiling too.

“What a pleasant surprise,” I admitted once we pulled apart.

“I thought I’d surprise you,” Helen said, her eyes sparkling. She tugged me gently toward the couch, and I let her. We sat, and she turned toward me with that same warmth in her gaze p>

How are you feeling, dear p>

Her question made me hesitate. Almost without thinking, my fingers found the necklace at my neck…the one she’d given me. I never take it off. I tugged lightly at the chain, then smiled. “I’m okay….still in one piece p>

But deep down, I knew she hadn’t come all this way just to check on me. Helen didn’t seem like the type of person who’d waste her moves.

I tilted my head, studying her carefully. “Have you seen Alexander? He must still be in that meeting in his office p>

She shrugged. “No, I haven’t seen him. And I’m not even sure he’d want to see me right now. He’s probably holding grudges p>

The light way she said it made me pause. I couldn’t tell if she was joking or if there was truth hidden in her words. Helen had a way of masking seriousness with a smile, and right now I couldn’t read her. She reminded me of my mother.

Irene cleared her throat softly, like she’d been waiting for the right moment. “I’ll leave you both catch up, ” she said, and slipped out, closing the door behind her.

Silence settled for a moment between Helen and me, heavy in a way that didn’t match her earlier brightness.
