Chapter 33

FAYE

I was still replaying my conversation with Kyle when I stepped back toward the pack house, the cool evening air brushing over my skin.

My thoughts were a tangled mess of suspicion and irritation…at Alexander for shutting me out, at the fact that I’d been kept ignorant while warriors were clearly preparing for something, and, if I was honest, at myself for even caring so much.

I was halfway into the first hallway when I heard light, quick footsteps behind me.

“Luna Faye p>

I turned to see Maya, jogging toward me with a slightly breathless smile.

“Evening, Maya,” I greeted, trying to soften my tone. She was sweet, and I didn’t want my mood spilling onto her.

bad

She clasped her hands together. “I was asked to come find you and ask what you’d like for dinner tonight p>

I blinked. “Ask me… specifically p>

She nodded quickly. “Yes, Luna Faye. They said to check with you first before we start cooking. We can make anything you’d like p>

I tilted my head, suspicious. “Why? Don’t you usually follow a menu? I’ve seen you all bring out dishes in the evenings like clockwork p>

Her smile faltered for a split second. “That’s true, but tonight’s… different. We were told to make an exception p>

I narrowed my eyes slightly. “By who p>

“Alpha Alexander.” She said it like it was the simplest thing in the world, but my mind immediately sharpened.

Of all people. What game is he playing.

I crossed my arms loosely, studying her. “I’m not going for dinner,” I said. “So just tell them not to bother with mine tonight p>

Maya hesitated, shifting her weight nervously. “I’m sorry, Luna, but it was a direct instruction from the Alpha. He said to make sure we prepare something you want p>

I bit back a laugh that wasn’t even close to amused. Oh, so now he cares whether I eat or

not?

If Alexander had ordered this, it wasn’t because he suddenly wanted to pamper me. That man couldn’t even hold a conversation with me without turning it into a power play–so no, I wasn’t about to fall for some fake display of affection.

And yet… curiosity flickered despite myself.

Why would he make such a request? Was he trying to make up for earlier? Unlikely. Was it some sort of calculated move? Much more likely.

I studied Maya for a moment. “Did he say anything else p>

She shook her head. “Just to find out what you’d like, so the kitchen can prepare it p>

I almost told her to still pass on the message that I wasn’t hungry, but then another thought slipped in…what if he was actually going to be at dinner tonight? He skipped more meals than he attended in general. In fact, we hadn’t sat at the dining table together since I arrived. But if he was planning to show up, that could be an opportunity.

Not necessarily to pry the truth out of him about the security issue…because let’s be real, Alexander wouldn’t just “open up“…but maybe to watch him, gauge his mood. See if I’d misread him earlier, if perhaps he really was just trying to be security–conscious and there

wasn’t an actual threat.

I hated that part of me even wanted to understand him better.

Sighing, I finally said, “Fine. Tell them to make… steak, seasoned potatoes, and that herb bread they make sometimes.” I just said the first things that came to mind…not like I actually

cared for those.

Maya brightened immediately. “Yes, Luna! I’ll let them know immediately. ” She darted off toward the kitchen entrance before I could change my mind.

I lingered a moment on the steps, watching the last streaks of sunlight fade into the horizon.

The dining hall was warm when I entered later, the table had been set with silverware aligned perfectly, wine glasses catching the glow from the chandelier.

And there he was….Alexander sat at the head of the table, his posture relaxed as though he were trying to appear casual but was still every inch himself. His eyes–those cold gray eyes -lifted to meet mine as I entered.

“Faye.” His voice was low, smooth, and devoid of any real warmth as usual.

“Alpha Alexander.” I kept my tone equally neutral, walking to my seat at the opposite end of the table.

A faint smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. “I hear you made a dinner request p>

I arched a brow. “I hear you made it your personal mission to make sure I eat tonight p>

His gaze flickered, just briefly, before he poured himself a glass of wine. “I didn’t want your skipping meals p>

“Since when?” I asked lightly.

His smirk didn’t fade. “Since I was told you skipped lunch. I thought maybe you didn’t like the menu p>

What is wrong with this man? He must have known the reason I skipped lunch was probably because I was fed up with being treated like an outsider… especially with his attitude earlier.

I didn’t reply of course, letting the silence stretch as the staff began bringing in the dishes. When they placed the grilled steak before me, the smell was mouthwatering, but my appetite was tangled up with the tension between us.

Where was Irene when I needed her to lighten up the place?

It was as if Alexander heard my thoughts. “Irene is a little caught up with something…she had her dinner delivered to her room instead p>

I simply nodded.

“And you? You’re usually the busy one. I wasn’t expecting you to be here.” I said, cutting a small piece of meat. “…special squads training at night in preparation for assignments… Sounds like there’s a lot going on p>

His eyes narrowed just slightly. “You’ve been asking questions p>

“Not really,” I said, meeting his gaze steadily. “Information just… finds its way to me. Even though some people think I’m not qualified to know anything p>

For a moment, there was something confusing in his expression. Then he looked down, slicing into his own meal. “It’s nothing you need to concern yourself with p>

I let out a soft laugh, though there was no humor in it. “Of course not. Why would the Luna of the pack ever need to concern herself with what’s happening in her own territory p>

His gaze snapped up at that. But instead of rising to the bait, he said calmly, “Eat your dinner,

I was about to respond to that, but a voice stopped me… Bella’s voice.

“Hi, Alex…” she said, walking towards the table.
