Rain lashed against the windows of the penthouse at The Spire. It was a safe house in the sky, far above the mud and blood of the city below.
Skye sat on the velvet sofa, a mug of hot cocoa in her hands.
Alistair was across the room, pouring himself a scotch. “He’s looking for you,” Alistair said. He tapped his phone. “My contacts say Liam is making calls from his hospital bed. He’s furious p>
“Let him look,” Skye said, staring into the dark liquid in her mug. “He needs to understand that I’m not something he can just… retrieve p>
“He’s bleeding,” Alistair noted. “Literally. The nurses say he keeps trying to get up p>
“He’ll heal,” Skye said. “Men like Liam always do p>
Her phone, sitting on the coffee table, began to buzz. It was a blocked number, but she knew who it was.
She didn’t answer.
Alistair’s phone rang a second later. He looked at the screen and raised an eyebrow.
“Speak of the devil,” Alistair said. He pressed the speakerphone button and set the device on the table between them.
“Where is she?” Liam’s voice filled the room—raw, distorted by pain and rage.
Alistair took a slow sip of his drink. “Mr. Kensington. You sound unwell. Perhaps you should be in bed p>
“I know she’s with you, Thorne!” Liam shouted. “I saw the news. Tell me where she is p>
“She is safe,” Alistair said coolly. “Which is more than she was when she was with you p>
“I saved her life!” Liam screamed. “I crashed my car for her p>
“And then you let your mistress sit by your bedside and lie to you,” Alistair countered. “You let her tell you Skye abandoned you. You believed her. That was the moment you lost her, Liam. Not on the highway. In the hospital room p>
There was silence on the other end. Heavy, breathing silence.

“She heard everything,” Alistair lied smoothly. “She heard you choose Seraphina. Again p>
“No,” Liam groaned. “That’s not… let me talk to her p>
Skye looked at Alistair. She shook her head.
“She doesn’t want to speak to you,” Alistair said. “She is currently… occupied p>
He let the implication hang in the air. It was cruel. It was calculated.
“If you touch her,” Liam growled, his voice dropping to a dangerous octave, “I will kill you p>
“You can try,” Alistair said. “But you can barely lift your head, Liam. Go home. Go to your mistress. Leave the queen to the king p>
He hung up.
Skye let out a breath. “You enjoyed that p>
“Immensely,” Alistair admitted. “He needs to be broken, Skye. Completely. Only then will he stop coming for you p>
“Or he’ll become more dangerous,” Skye murmured.
