Skye reached the elevator bank. She stopped and turned around.
She looked at the scene: Liam, red-faced and cruel. Seraphina, wet and humiliated on the floor.
Skye met Liam’s eyes. She didn’t look angry. She looked bored.
“Pathetic, Liam,” she said.
The elevator doors opened. She stepped in. The doors closed on her face—a mask of absolute indifference.
Liam kicked the yellow mop bucket. It clattered across the hall, splashing more water onto Seraphina.
“Stay away from Skye,” Liam warned Seraphina, pointing a shaking finger at her. “Or I’ll kill you myself p>
He stormed out.
Seraphina sat in the dirty water. The cleaning fluid soaked into her uniform.
Around her, the office staff began to giggle. Manager Zoe covered her mouth, laughing.
“Did you see that?” someone whispered. “He used her and dumped her in seconds p>
Seraphina’s humiliation burned hotter than fire. It seared through her shock. It hardened into a cold, dense stone in her gut.
It wasn’t Liam’s fault. It was never Liam’s fault.

Gabriel Ross leaned against his silver Porsche in the parking garage. He saw Skye approaching.

Skye looked out at the city lights.
“The big execution,” she corrected him. “I’m tired of playing intern. It’s time the Queen took her throne p>
The next morning, the atrium of Trinity Media was packed. It was a departmental review meeting, but gossip had drawn a crowd from other floors, filling the space with eager spectators. The air crackled with electricity.
Seraphina stood on the small stage next to Manager Zoe. They held microphones. Zoe looked nervous, her eyes darting around the room as if expecting Alistair Thorne to kick down the doors, but Seraphina vibrated with vindictive energy.
