She began to walk toward the stage.

“She owns the place?” a junior exec whispered to his colleague. “How? The Kensingtons cut her off p>
“Look at the brooch,” the colleague whispered back, pointing to the silver hawk. “Thorne money. It has to be. He bought her the company p>
Skye stepped onto the platform. She towered over the trembling Seraphina.
Skye reached out and took the microphone from Seraphina’s limp hand.
“I don’t sleep with talent, Seraphina,” Skye said. Her voice was cool, amplified, filling the space.
She pointed a manicured finger at Gabriel Ross.

Gabriel waved cheekily from the back. “Best boss ever. Gives great bonuses p>
Skye turned to Zoe. Zoe was shaking so hard her clipboard rattled.
“You’re fired,” Skye said simply. “Get out p>
Zoe burst into tears and ran off the stage.
Skye turned her gaze to Seraphina. Seraphina looked like she was about to faint. Her legs gave way, and she collapsed to her knees on the stage.
“And you…” Skye said, looking down at her nemesis. “You stay right there p>
Security guards dragged the screaming Manager Zoe out of the building. Her heels left scuff marks on the polished floor. The atrium fell into dead silence. Three hundred employees held their breath.
Skye looked down at Seraphina, who was kneeling on the stage, weeping.
“I’m not firing you, Seraphina,” Skye said.

Seraphina flushed red. How did she know?
“I am a benevolent employer,” Skye said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “There is an opening at one of our subsidiaries. It pays minimum wage, which should cover your motel bill if you budget carefully p>
She opened the file and read aloud.
“Sanitation Engineer at the Apex Logistics Warehouse in Jersey p>
A ripple of stifled giggles moved through the crowd.
“Janitor?” Seraphina whispered, horrified. “You want me to be a janitor p>
“It’s a job, Seraphina,” Skye said coldly. “Take it or starve. Those are your options p>
Seraphina looked at the crowd. They were laughing at her. She looked at Skye, who stood there like a goddess of vengeance. Her pride screamed at her to run.
