Alistair turned slowly. He was taller than Liam, broader. He looked down at Liam with the boredom of a lion studying a mouse.
“Ex-wife,” Alistair corrected. “And I have every business here. I’m the one who pulled her out of the ocean while you were busy crying on the beach p>

“You failed,” Alistair said. “Like you fail at everything p>
He put an arm around Skye’s waist, pulling her against his side. “Let’s go. The smell in here is making me nauseous p>
Liam lunged. He tried to grab Skye’s arm, to pull her back. “Skye, don’t go with him! He’s dangerous p>
Alistair moved faster than Liam could track. He caught Liam’s wrist midair and twisted it back with a sickening pop. Liam cried out, dropping to one knee. The pain was blinding—white-hot needles shooting up his arm.
“Touch her again,” Alistair whispered, leaning down so only Liam could hear, “and I will break every bone in your hand p>
He shoved Liam back. Liam stumbled and fell onto the divorce papers scattered on the floor.
“Police!” someone shouted from the back.
Uniformed officers swarmed into the church. They weren’t coming for Skye. They headed straight for Seraphina.
“Seraphina Miller, also known as Sarah Jones,” the lead officer announced, pulling out handcuffs. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, fraud, and identity theft p>

Seraphina screamed as they dragged her away. “She paid for it! She knew! Don’t let her get away with it p>
Liam sat on the floor, cradling his broken wrist. He watched them drag Seraphina out. He didn’t move. He didn’t speak. He felt nothing but a hollow, echoing void where his heart used to be.
Skye didn’t watch Seraphina leave. She was already walking out the side door, guided by Alistair’s steady hand.
Once they were in the back of Alistair’s armored SUV, the adrenaline crashed. Skye began to shake. Her hands trembled violently in her lap.
