A chill of fear swept over him. Thank God he had run when he did–otherwise, he’d probably be in the same shape as Freya right
now.
“I’ll get help. Just hang in there,” Carter called out before sprinting back toward the hospital entrance.
He left Freya alone, crumpled on the asphalt of the parking lot, groaning in pain.
Upstairs in the hospital room, Edward was still unaware of what had happened outside. Not having heard back from Arabella for a while, he decided to call her.
“Arabella, you didn’t run into Mom and Dad, did you?” Edward asked, concern coloring his tone.
“No, don’t worry. I got my bandage changed and I’m already back home. I’ll come by another day,” Arabella replied, her voice relaxed.
“That’s good. How much longer until your foot’s better?” Edward pressed gently.
“Probably just another day or two. It’s okay.”
“I think Mom and Dad might swing by the hospital again over the next few days. If you can get your dressing changed somewhere else, maybe avoid coming here,” Edward suggested, thinking of her safety.
“Alright. To make you feel better, I’ll go to another clinic. But that means I won’t visit for a few days. Once my foot’s healed, I’ll come see you,” Arabella agreed.
She knew this was what Edward needed to hear to stop worrying.
“Okay, as long as you’re alright. I’ll probably lay low on calling for a while too–they barged into my room earlier without knocking. Luckily, I was just watching TV. Could’ve been awkward,” Edward said, relief finally settling in.
“They came into your room?” Arabella’s brow furrowed.
Realizing he’d said too much, Edward quickly added, “They were just checking if you were with me. Good thing you weren’t here today. They left once they saw I was alone.”
“I see. If they give you a hard time, you have to tell me,” Arabella insisted, her tone protective.
“Don’t worry, they won’t cause trouble for me,” Edward reassured her lightly, not wanting to add to her concerns.
“Let’s leave it at that. You get some rest. Talk soon.” Edward hung up.
Right after, he dialed Owen’s number. “Owen, it’s Edward. About what happened in the room earlier–let’s keep that from my sister, okay? I don’t want her stressing over something small.”
“Got it. I won’t mention it to Dr. Macdonald,” Owen promised.
Meanwhile, Alfred had driven them back to Cloudrise Manor.
Florence, who had been growing restless during their absence, paced the hall.
Jonathan watched her and tried to calm her down. “Relax. Ethan and Alfred were with Arabella. I’m sure everything’s fine.”

“You don’t understand–my eyelid’s been twitching all afternoon. I’ve had this uneasy feeling. They’re usually back by this time, even if they visited Edward. It’s been over an hour…” Florence kept glancing out the window.
“Maybe the clinic was just busy today and the dressing change took longer. If you’re really worried, call her,” Jonathan suggested gently.
“You’re right. I’ll call Arabella.” Florence picked up her phone just as a voice came from the doorway.
“Who’s calling me?” Arabella asked.
The next moment, Ethan wheeled her into the hall.
Seeing them, Florence finally exhaled in relief. She set down her phone and hurried over. “Arabella, what took so long today?”
“The clinic was pretty packed–just took a while to get through,” Arabella said, offering a simple explanation to avoid worrying her.
“See? I told you it was probably just busy today,” Jonathan said, sounding pleased with his guess.
“Your mother was starting to worry when you weren’t back on time,” Jonathan added warmly.
Florence shot him a look. “What matters is they’re home now.”
Jonathan dropped the subject and turned to Arabella. “What did the doctor say today?”
“He said it’s healing nicely. Should be all better in a couple of days,” Arabella replied with a small smile.
“Really? That’s wonderful!”
“It’ll be good to be out of that wheelchair. It can’t be too comfortable,” Jonathan said, his eyes full of fatherly concern.
“It’s not, really,” Arabella admitted, glancing down at the chair.
“Well, I’ll let you all catch up. I’m heading upstairs for a bit,” Arabella said.
“I’ll take you up,” Alfred spoke up quickly, as though wanting to beat Ethan to it.
“Alright.”
Alfred guided her wheelchair toward the staircase.
Ethan glanced at Jonathan and Florence. “I’m feeling a bit tired myself. I’ll head up too.”
Just as Alfred wheeled Arabella into her room, her phone buzzed. She picked it up–it was Lucas.
“Hey, what’s up?” she answered,
“Not much. Just checking how your recovery’s going,” Lucas said, his tone casual but concerned.
“Going well. Probably back to class in a few days,” Arabella replied lightly.
