“That can’t be right?!” Ruby’s voice rose in disbelief. “She’s lying!”

“And what exactly am I lying about?” Arabella countered coolly.

“How would you even know someone invited Aletta for a consultation?” Ruby was convinced Arabella couldn’t possibly be Aletta’s protégée.

“My mentor informed me, naturally,” Arabella replied with composed assurance.

“No way. There’s no chance you’re actually Aletta’s apprentice,” Ruby insisted, shaking her head in denial.

Naomi spoke up, her tone carefully measured, “Arabella, we invited Dr. Aletta, and he agreed to come. So why are you the one standing here?”

Arabella shrugged slightly. “As I’ve said before, my mentor rarely sees patients personally. The last time Robert requested a consultation, she sent me. What made you think your invitation would be any different? Do you believe your standing is greater

than Robert’s?”

Faced with Arabella’s direct challenge, Naomi grew flustered. “I–I didn’t mean it like that.”

She wouldn’t dare imply such a thing. At her core, she simply refused to accept that Arabella was truly Aletta’s apprentice.

“She’s correct,” Robert affirmed with a mild smile. “I, too, originally reached out to Dr. Aletta, and Dr. Hamilton came in her stead. Of course, Dr. Hamilton’s skill is exceptional–I daresay on par with her mentor’s. That is likely why Aletta felt confident sending her.”

Recalling his initial trust in Arabella, Robert felt a sense of fortune.

With Robert’s corroboration, Naomi and Ruby no longer dared to question Arabella’s claim. To doubt Arabella now would be to doubt Robert’s own judgment.

“So,” Arabella continued, her gaze sweeping over them, “who exactly did you invite my mentor to examine?” She looked at Naomi. “You?” Then at Ruby. “Or you?”

Both remained silent. Arabella’s brow furrowed slightly. “The symptoms described in the request were quite unusual and don’t seem to match either of you. Is the patient perhaps someone else?

“However, this is Stewart Manor. If someone here required medical attention, why go through the trouble of having you extend an invitation on their behalf instead of contacting me directly?” 

The two women grew paler by the second, unable to formulate a response to Arabella’s logical onslaught.

“Dr. Hamilton, allow me to clarify,” Robert interjected on Naomi’s behalf. “Naomi mentioned she invited Dr. Aletta to give me a check–up–out of concern for my well–being. Her intentions were good.”

“Then why not state that clearly?” Arabella asked, her tone laced with quiet derision. “Why fabricate a list of bizarre symptoms? Had you been truthful, my mentor might not have taken note or dispatched me at all.” She looked at Naomi and Ruby with unveiled mockery. They had brought this upon themselves.

“Naomi, you weren’t truthful with Dr. Aletta?” Robert was taken aback. Why would they lie?

“We… we…” Naomi and Ruby exchanged panicked glances, finding no suitable explanation.

“This appears to be a setup.” Matthew’s voice cut through the tension.

All eyes turned toward the staircase, where Matthew was descending slowly.

Dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, his cool, commanding presence made him seem both unapproachable and utterly captivating.

Watching him draw near, Arabella let out a quiet inward sigh–he was just devastatingly handsome.

“Dr. Hamilton, you disagree?” Matthew’s voice sounded just above her.

Arabella snapped back to the present, realizing Matthew now stood directly before her, looking down.

Goodness, have I actually been staring? Definitely a dangerous level of magnetism.

With a slight curve of her lip, Arabella took a subtle step back. “I do agree.”

“If you agree, what were you pondering just now?” Matthew pressed, seemingly unwilling to let it go.

“Just wondering how you deduced it so quickly,” she replied. After all, she’d had prior knowledge.

Matthew responded with arrogant simplicity. “The execution was clumsy.”

It was obvious–transparent to anyone paying attention.

“What exactly are you two referring to?” Robert asked, still somewhat lost.

Matthew’s cold gaze settled on Naomi and Ruby. “They orchestrated this. Let them explain.”

“Matthew, please don’t misunderstand,” Naomi implored hastily. She could bear anything except Matthew’s disdain. “I was only concerned about Mr. Stewart’s health.”

“Grandfather has recovered. What you did wasn’t concern–it was disrespect,” Matthew stated, his tone turning glacial.

Using concern as a pretext for such underhanded maneuvering–Robert was not a pawn to be manipulated.

Naomi’s face drained of color, her legs weakening so that she stumbled back a step.

“Naomi!” Ruby quickly moved to support her.

Naomi’s eyes remained locked on Matthew as she whispered, “Matthew, you have to believe me. It really isn’t what you think.”

She would never–could never–dare to show disrespect toward Robert.

Matthew did not respond, his gaze already shifting away from her.

“Matthew…” Naomi’s eyes welled with tears. She regretted everything now, appearing as wounded and fragile as a cornered rabbit.

Matthew remained unmoved.

“Mr. Stewart, it wasn’t Naomi’s fault. I did it. It was all me.” Ruby finally gritted her teeth and claimed responsibility.
