“I hope so. In our circles, the Stewarts are among the few families truly worthy of Arabella.” Lena held her own quiet hopes for such a match.
“Naomi, do you really have work at the office?” Ruby asked her. She hadn’t heard anything about it earlier.
“No, I just made an excuse to leave,” Naomi replied, her expression darkening.
“Why? It would have been nice to stay for dinner,” Ruby mumbled. The meals at Hamilton Manor were always exceptional.
Naomi didn’t comment on Ruby’s preoccupation with food. Anxiously pulling Ruby aside, she said, “Ruby, I have a really bad feeling about this.”
The day’s events had left her with a growing sense of urgency. She had always believed Robert was fond of her. As long as Robert remained on her side, she felt she still had a chance. But his behavior today…
“Ruby, do you think Robert is also taken with Arabella now? Have I lost my opportunity with him?” Naomi asked, her voice laced with worry.
“Robert was acting a bit different, but you already promised him you’d visit Stewart Manor often. You still have plenty of chances to win back his favor,” Ruby advised, trying to sound encouraging.
“I only said that because I was afraid Robert would start ignoring me completely.” She wasn’t ready to give up so easily.
Seeing Robert’s attention fixed solely on Arabella, sitting back and doing nothing would have meant truly forfeiting any remaining chance.
“So don’t panic. From now on, just figure out what he appreciates and make sure he sees that side of you,” Ruby suggested, laying out her simple plan.
“Figure out what he likes…” Naomi repeated, thoughtful.
Ruby felt a surge of pride. “You’ve known Robert for years–you understand him far better than Arabella ever could. In that respect, Arabella can’t hold a candle to you.”
Naomi regained a sliver of confidence. “You’re right. I do understand him better.”
As long as she visited Robert frequently and reminded him of her considerate nature, surely his fondness for her would return.
“But Naomi, how is Arabella so accomplished? How does she even know Dr. Aletta?” Ruby grumbled, resentment coloring her tone. Not only did she know the famous specialist, but she was also their protégé. How did Arabella get so lucky?
“I don’t know anything about that either.” Naomi, too, was deeply unsettled by this revelation.
“Do you think… she could be lying?” Ruby ventured, her voice dropping.
Naomi was taken aback. “Lying? About what?”
“Think about it. None of us has ever actually seen this famous doctor. It’s all just Arabella’s word,” Ruby pointed out, growing more convinced. Maybe Arabella had fabricated the entire story.

“But Robert confirmed it. It can’t be wrong…” Naomi hesitated, doubt creeping in.
“Robert could have been deceived by her,” Ruby insisted, now fully believing she had uncovered the truth.

Naomi considered this and found Ruby’s logic persuasive. Her eyes darkened, and she gave a slow nod. “There might be something to what you’re saying.”
A shrewd glint appeared in Ruby’s eyes. “In that case, if we expose Arabella’s deception, Robert will be deeply disappointed in her. Then your path will be clear again.”
Ruby thought her scheme was flawless. Once everyone saw Arabella for the fraud she was, who would continue to dote on her?
Hearing that this was her new opportunity, Naomi felt a flicker of hope. “What should we do, then?”
“Well, I’ve heard… when the time is right, we’ll…”
After listening to Ruby’s whispered plan, Naomi nodded in agreement. “It’s a good idea. Let’s proceed.”
“I’ll make the arrangements,” Ruby volunteered eagerly.
“Thank you, Ruby. I really don’t know what I’d do without you.” Naomi was genuinely moved by her cousin’s willingness to help.
“Naomi, there’s no need for thanks. Helping you is what I should do. We grew up together, and you’ve always looked out for me,” Ruby said, smiling warmly as she squeezed Naomi’s hand.
Of course she had to help Naomi–where else would her own future advantages come from?
“I still want to thank you. Come on, let me take you out for a proper meal,” Naomi said sincerely. She truly was grateful to have Ruby on her side.
Ruby linked her arm through Naomi’s, showing a spark of excitement. “Then I won’t hold back. I want a real feast.”
She hadn’t expected that casually offering a scheme would net her a lavish dinner. She planned to indulge to her heart’s content.
Naomi readily agreed. “Order anything you like.”
“Let’s go.” Arm in arm, Ruby and Naomi walked to the car and got in.
“You already knew about Dr. Macdonald’s background, didn’t you?” Robert glanced at Matthew and asked
When he had expressed shock at learning Dr. Macdonald was the true Hamilton heiress, he’d noticed Matthew’s unusual calm–it wasn’t the reaction of someone hearing the news for the first time.
“I discovered it by coincidence,” Matthew replied evenly.
Robert felt a twinge of displeasure. “And you didn’t think to tell me?”
“It didn’t seem relevant.” All that had mattered to him was that she could treat his grandfather’s condition. “Hmph.” Robert shot Matthew an exasperated look. The boy had clearly kept it from him on purpose.
If he hadn’t stumbled upon the truth today, Matthew would probably have continued the deception indefinitely.
