“Well, in that case, it’s no wonder Arabella achieved such a high score. Lucas really is a top–tier instructor–his students are always exceptional,” Naomi said, her praise sounding smooth and practiced.

“Hmph.” Lucas gave a noncommittal grunt before turning back to Arabella. “Shall we?”

A faint, amused smile touched the corner of Arabella’s lips.

Naomi certainly had a way with words. With just a few sentences, she had neatly attributed all of Arabella’s success solely to Lucas‘ coaching, completely erasing her own effort and skill. According to that logic, Arabella had only passed because of Lucas, right?

But she couldn’t be bothered to argue. Securing that pass was the only thing that mattered today.

After the two of them left, Naomi and Ruby exited the testing lab as well.

“Naomi… am I totally finished? Waaah…” Ruby finally broke from her stupor, collapsing into despair.

“It’s okay. We’ll just work harder. We’ll pass next time,” Naomi reassured her, though her tone was distant.

“That’s not what I mean! I’m talking about Lucas… His attention is completely fixed on Arabella now. He told me to drop out because of her!” Ruby wailed, tears and sniffles making a mess of her face.

Naomi wrinkled her nose slightly in distaste but forced herself to keep patting Ruby’s shoulder. “Don’t think like that. There’s still a chance.”

“Really?” Ruby’s crying hiccupped to a stop.

Naomi nodded. “Of course. They aren’t officially together yet, so you still have time.”

“But… Lucas was so cold to me.” Ruby’s voice trembled.

“So… are you thinking of giving up?” Naomi asked, her brow furrowing slightly as she tested the waters.

Truthfully, she hoped Arabella and Lucas would get together–it would clear the path for her own interest in Matthew. But she couldn’t let that show in front of Ruby, who was still useful for her schemes and ideas.

Ruby was quiet for a moment, then she straightened up, her jaw set. “No. I’m not giving up.”

She refused to let Arabella win. Lucas was not someone she would surrender easily.

“Good,” Naomi said, giving Ruby’s back a final pat before letting her hand fall.

Unaware of the shift in Naomi’s thoughts, Ruby continued, “But Naomi, how is Arabella that good? A perfect score?”

They had been training for ages and still failed, yet Arabella aced it?

“Sigh,” Naomi let out a weary breath. “We just never had an instructor on Lucas‘ level.”

She was secretly jealous too, but she would never admit aloud that Arabella might be more talented.

“See? I knew she was clinging to Lucas for a reason. She’s so calculating. If it weren’t for that, he wouldn’t favor her so much and look down on us,” Ruby grumbled, resentment coloring every word.

“Let’s not talk about her anymore. Come on,” Naomi said, abruptly cutting off the topic. She was tired of hearing Arabella’s name.

Seeing Naomi start walking toward the training wing, Ruby asked, confused, “Where are you going?”

“To practice,” Naomi stated, her voice firm with determination. She had to train harder. She had to pass next time. She couldn’t let Arabella pull impossibly far ahead. With Arabella moving on to the third phase, falling behind was not an option.

“Ugh, who’s in the mood for that now? Let’s just go home,” Ruby urged, dragging her feet.

“You go ahead.” Naomi shook her head and continued walking toward the simulators.

Going home now would only mean walking into a house likely celebrating Arabella’s success. She was not in the mood for that particular brand of discomfort. It was better to return later.

Seeing Naomi’s resolve, Ruby had little choice but to sigh and follow her to practice.

‘My treat today–a celebration. No arguments,” Lucas declared as soon as they were seated in the restaurant.

Arabella glanced at him and acquiesced. “Alright. When I get my license, dinner’s on me. A proper thank you for all your coaching.”

‘Having you as a student is a coach’s dream. Trust me, it hasn’t been hard work at all,” Lucas said sincerely. A learner with her aptitude was genuinely rare.

‘Let’s order.” Lucas passed her the menu.

Arabella looked it over, made her selections, and handed it back. “Your turn.”

Dr. Hamilton. Fancy seeing you here,” a cool, distinctly masculine voice interrupted.

Arabella looked up. Matthew. 

What was he doing here?

Yes. The evaluation just finished, and it was lunchtime,” she replied.

Matthew’s eyebrow lifted slightly as his gaze slid to Lucas. “Do coaching duties typically extend to shared meals?”

‘Arabella passed her exam. I’m treating her to celebrate,” Lucas explained, though he found Matthew’s tone oddly pointed. On the surface, it was a casual question, but Lucas detected an undercurrent of chill.

‘You passed,” Matthew said, his focus returning to Arabella. She never failed to impress.

‘Yes.” Arabella nodded, then asked casually, “Are you meeting someone here, Mr. Stewart?”

“No,” Matthew said, and to her surprise, he pulled out a chair and sat down at their table.

Arabella’s eyes widened a fraction. Why was he joining them?

“I was about to have lunch. You don’t mind if I join you, do you?” Matthew stated calmly, though it sounded more like a declaration than a question.

“Not at all. Make yourself comfortable, Mr. Stewart,” Lucas said, the polite words feeling a bit forced as they left his mouth.
