Kyle’s reprimand earned him an irritated glare from Ruby. “So what? It just means more practice hours for me. That way, I’ll build a more solid foundation, she argued stubbornly.
“You…” Kyle sighed in resignation, unsure how to deal with her.
Suddenly, an idea seemed to strike Ruby. She looked at Kyle and asked. “Kyle, how long have you known Lucas?”
“A few years now. Why do you ask?” Kyle looked at her, puzzled.
“Well, since you’ve known him awhile… where does he usually hang out? What are his hobbies?” Seizing the opportunity, Ruby began her interrogation. If Lucas wouldn’t tell her directly, she’d have to gather intelligence elsewhere.
Hearing her line of questioning, Kyle studied her with amused interest. “Asking about Lucas‘ personal life… Could it be you have a little crush
“That’s not your concern. Just tell me what he likes to do,” Ruby deflected.
“If you focus and complete this simulator module properly, I might consider sharing a detail or two,” Kyle offered, using the information as leverage.
Left with little choice, Ruby reluctantly agreed to his terms. “Fine,” she said, rolling her eyes.
“Then get to practicing,” Kyle urged.
Ruby cast one last longing glance toward Lucas Before reluctantly beginning her simulator
drill.
Nearby, Lucas finished his explanation to Arabella. “You remember all the procedures and safety protocols I just outlined, Ms. Hamilton?”
I remember. And just call me Arabella. Ms. Hamilton‘ feels too formal,‘ she replied.
Since they’d be working together regularly, the constant formality felt unnecessary and still
to her.
Hearing her invite him to use her first name, Lugas felt a subtle but distinct shift in their dynamic. This move to a more familiar address gnaled, to him, a step toward a closer
rapport.
A smile touched his lips. “Alright, Arabella. You may begin whenever you’re ready”
With his approval, Arabella carefully guided the simulator through takeoff, lifting it smoothly

“Wind? What wind?” Arabella frowned slightly, feeling only the hum of the simulator around her.
“Use your imagination,” Lucas said with a light chuckle.
Arabella couldn’t help but feel a wave of mild exasperation at his instruction.
“So, how does it feel?” Lucas asked.
“Not bad,” she replied.
Since Lucas had set the scenario to a beginner–friendly difficulty, Arabella handled the simulator with relative ease, executing the basic maneuvers in the air.
Lucas watched her steady, controlled flight, his eyes reflecting genuine admiration.
After a while, Arabella smoothly brought the simulator back down, executing a perfect landing on the runway.
“Excellent. A flawless takeoff and safe landing on your first simulator run is impressive,” Lucas praised, his commendation sincere. Her performance had genuinely surprised him.
In his years of instruction, apart from his own first attempt, he hadn’t seen another student manage a safe landing on their initial try. Most ended in a virtual crash.
“Thank you, Lucas. I had a good teacher,” Arabella said, pleased with her successful simulation.
“Credit your own aptitude. Alright, take a short break,” Lucas said, smiling as he guided her to a seating area nearby.
Back at Ruby’s station, Kyle’s voice cut through her concentration. “Ms. Peterson, watch your altitude. You’re dipping too low.”
Ruby quickly adjusted the controls to climb.
“Ms. Peterson, now you’re too high. Reduce altitude and follow the flight path parameters.” Kyle instructed again.
Ruby pressed her lips together in annoyance, muttering under her breath, “First up, then down. Why don’t you just take the controls yourself?”

“What was that?” Kyle asked, not quite catching her words.
“Nothing. What’s next?” Ruby said flatly.

“According to the training scenario, you can attempt a simple maneuver now–a standard turn. Then, complete the circuit and prepare for landing,” Kyle explained.
“Got it.” Ruby then attempted the turn in the virtual sky. Suddenly, during the maneuver, she overcorrected. The controls slipped from her intended input, and in an instant, the simulator shuddered and plummeted in a crash sequence.
“Ah!” Ruby let out a short scream of alarm.
Kyle watched the crash from his monitor and sighed. “A natural talent… for crashing.”
“Ruby, are you okay?” Naomi called over, concerned upon hearing the shout.
“I’m fine, I’m fine. Just wiped out,” Ruby said, taking a moment to steady her nerves as she looked at Naomi. Even though it was a simulation, the visceral sensation of the plunge had felt startlingly real, sending her heart racing.
