Arabella hadn’t actually wanted to go to the hospital, but getting Edward back there required her to go as well, so she accepted Lucas‘ offer.
“It’s no trouble. The only issue is there’s no wheelchair here. I’ll have to carry you to the car,” Lucas said, glancing around the area. Seeing no sign of one, he looked back at Arabella, waiting for her consent.
“Alright,” Arabella agreed, knowing he wouldn’t find a wheelchair on a public beach anyway.
Lucas then gently lifted her and began walking toward the parking lot.
Edward followed alongside, a mix of guilt and helplessness washing over him. Seeing Arabella hurt and being unable to do anything tangible to help made him feel utterly useless. As her older brother, he should have been her protector, yet here he was, powerless. He really wasn’t living up to his role.
Lucas carefully settled Arabella into the passenger seat. “Did that hurt?” he asked gently.
“No,” she replied.
He closed the car door for her, then got into the driver’s seat. “Kindwell Hospital, right?”
“Yes.”
With her confirmation, Lucas started the car and headed for the hospital.
Soon, they arrived at the main entrance. Lucas got out, lifted Arabella once more, and carried her inside. Once in an outpatient treatment room, Lucas called for a nurse to properly clean and dress the wound. Arabella looked over at Edward. “Edward, you should go back to your room and rest. I’ll be fine here.” She didn’t want him anxiously waiting around.
“How could I leave? At least let me stay until the dressing is done,” Edward insisted. He wasn’t comfortable leaving before her wound was properly tended to.
Lucas recalled Arabella mentioning her brother was a patient himself, here for treatment and recovery. He turned to Edward. “You must be tired too. Why don’t you take a seat on the bench in the hall? I’ll come get you once she’s all bandaged up.”
Seeing Lucas‘ suggestion and noticing Arabella’s silent agreement, Edward reluctantly nodded. “Alright then. But be sure to call me when it’s finished.”
“I will.”
After all, there wasn’t much he could do in the treatment room anyway. It was better to wait quietly
outside.
Once Edward had left, Arabella looked at Lucas. “You can go wait with my brother. I’ll be okay here by myself.”

“I can’t just leave you here injured. Don’t worry about me; I’ll stay,” Lucas replied with a gentle but firm smile, making no move to leave. Seeing his resolve, Arabella didn’t press the issue.
As the attending nurse began cleaning the cut, Lucas spoke up softly, “Please try to be as gentle as you can.”
The nurse glanced from Lucas to Arabella and gave a knowing smile. “Is this your boyfriend? Handsome and so caring–you’ve got a good one.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll be careful,” she added, noting Lucas‘ concerned expression.
Hearing the misunderstanding, Arabella felt a flush of awkwardness and quickly corrected her. “No, you’ve got it wrong. He’s not my boyfriend.”
“Yeah, we’re not…” Lucas chimed in, sounding equally flustered.
The nurse looked between them with an unconvinced smirk. “Oh, don’t be shy. You two have that ‘new couple‘ look about you. Nothing to be embarrassed about.”
“Really, it’s not like that. You’re misunderstanding,” Arabella insisted, her cheeks warming slightly.
“Alright, all bandaged up. You can take your girlfriend home now.”
“Oh, and bring her back once a day to have the dressing changed. Try to keep her foot dry, and avoid spicy foods–it’ll help the healing,” the nurse instructed, directing the advice squarely at Lucas as if he were in charge, completely brushing off their earlier clarification.
“Got it. I’ll make sure she comes back for the changes,” Lucas said, deciding not to argue further and simply nodding in acknowledgment.
“Okay, take care now,” the nurse said before turning to leave.
“What kind of nurse jumps to conclusions like that?” Arabella muttered, clearly annoyed as she watched her walk away.
“Don’t let it bother you. Let’s get you back to the car first,” Lucas said soothingly.
“No hurry. I want to speak with my brother for a moment,” Arabella replied.
Just then, Edward, having seen the nurse leave, walked back over. He looked at Arabella with concern. “How is it? Did she say it was serious?”
“Not serious at all. Everything’s fine.
“You should head back to your room and rest now. Lucas will take me home soon,” Arabella reassured him.
“Good, good. But I’m not in a rush to go up yet. Let me see you off first,” Edward said, still uneasy about leaving her.
“Really, it’s fine. Lucas is taking me to the car now, and you’d just be standing here. Go on up,” Arabella insisted, wanting Edward to return to his room so she could speak to Lucas privately.

“Alright then. Just promise you’ll take it easy these next few days–stay home and rest properly, Edward reminded her, his worry still evident.
“Don’t worry about me. I might not be able to visit for a couple of days, but call me if you need anything.” Arabella told him, her own concern mirrored in her eyes.
I’ll be perfectly fine here. Don’t you worry.”
Edward then turned to Lucas with a grateful smile. “Thank you for driving my sister home. Once I’m discharged, I owe you a proper meal.”
