“I’m just curious what was so urgent. Are the two of you that close?” Ethan looked at her with a scrutinizing gaze.
Arabella hadn’t been back for long. Even with her treating Robert, that was a recent development. However he looked at it, she and Matthew couldn’t possibly be on familiar enough terms for private conversations…
“Who’s close with him? I’ve only seen him a handful of times while treating Robert. You’re looking at me like we’re secretly dating or something,” Arabella retorted.
She wasn’t close with Matthew at all. First, her mom had gotten the wrong idea, and now Ethan was jumping to conclusions. What exactly had they done to give off that impression? Arabella couldn’t quite figure it out.
Ethan glanced at her, not entirely convinced, but not wanting to push it. “That’s not what I meant. Don’t get defensive.
“Let’s just drop it. But if Matthew ever bothers you or makes you uncomfortable, you have to tell me. I’ll handle it,” Ethan said, his concern evident. He just didn’t want his sister being pestered.
“Fine. But so far, no one’s bothering me, so you can relax,” Arabella insisted, feeling the need to set the record straight. Having her mom read into things was one thing; she didn’t need her brother doing it too.

Meanwhile, Lucas accompanied Kyle to get his scan results and then to pick up his medication.
In the hallway, Kyle looked at Lucas with a teasing glint. “That was Mr. Stewart back there, right? What do you think he wanted with Ms. Hamilton that was so top–secret he had to shoo us away?”
“You should worry less about them and more about yourself. You’re injured–what about your trainees?” Although Lucas was also a little curious, he didn’t want to dwell on Matthew and deftly changed the subject.
Hearing this, Kyle immediately put on a pitiful face. “Lucas, look at me. I’m in no shape to teach. You’ve just started with the simulator training, right? How about you…”

Kyle wore a troubled expression. “But right now, you’re the only one I can ask”
“Tell you what,” Kyle bargained, “I’ll tell my guys to take a few days off too. Once Ms. Hamilton is better, you can teach them all together. How’s that sound?”
“Look at this mess,” he said, gesturing to his bandaged hand. “I wouldn’t ask if I wasn’t stuck. Just do me this solid, okay?”
Looking at Kyle’s work–related injury and their history, Lucas reluctantly gave in. “Alright, fine. But only until you’re healed. Then you take your trainees back.”
“Deal!” Kyle said, brightening up. “I’ll be back on my feet ASAP”
“Hey, Lucas,” Kyle began, a mischievous look returning to his eyes.
“What now?”
“I couldn’t help but notice… you seemed pretty concerned about Ms. Hamilton back there.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. I wasn’t,” Lucas denied quickly.
“Still denying it? I saw you. You only had eyes for her–totally forgot about your injured buddy here,” Kyle smirked.
“Are you, a grown man, really jealous? She’s my trainee. Is it so weird for me to check on her when she’s hurt? It’s basic decency.
“Look at you with that gossipy face. Where’s your professional dignity?” Lucas turned the tables, deflecting the attention.
Kyle immediately played the victim. “My dignity? I was even trying to give you two some space earlier! Is this the thanks I get?”
“Oh please, who was whining about the pain two seconds ago?” Lucas shot back.
“Can’t a guy complain when he’s hurt? You didn’t care–you just happily wheeled Ms. Hamilton off…”
“Happily‘? Watch your wording. I did no such thing!” Lucas insisted.
Kyle rolled his eyes. “Cut the act. I saw it clear as day.” He leaned in slightly. “Level with me… Do you have a little crush on Ms. Hamilton?”
“A crush on your head! Did they wrap your brain up with your hand?” Lucas glared at hi coldly.

Kyle quickly grinned and shuffled out of swatting range.

Back in Matthew’s car, the atmosphere was quict.
“Who was that man pushing Arabella carlier?” Matthew asked Andy, his tone neutral.
Andy thought for a moment. “I believe that was Lucas. The son of the Myers family.”
