Chapter 215 Whispers and Speculation
After Matthew had left, Alfred looked at Arabella and said, “Don’t you think Matthew seemed a little… different today?”
Arabella gave him a puzzled look. “Different how? I don’t know him well enough to tell. I didn’t notice anything.”

“I just got this feeling he was being… particularly attentive toward you,” Alfred said, his expression implying there was more to it.
“Which eye of yours saw that? Are you sleep–deprived and starting to imagine things?” Arabella rolled her eyes, refusing to entertain the idea.
“Both of my eyes saw it.” Alfred then turned to Jonathan and Florence. “Mom, Dad, did you catch that vibe just now?”
“I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. It’s perfectly natural for Matthew to check in on Arabella,” Jonathan said, his expression neutral.
Florence played along. “Right, I didn’t notice anything either. Matthew visited because Arabella is their family physician. You must be tired–why don’t you go upstairs and rest for a bit?”
Florence felt it wasn’t the right moment to point out the obvious in front of Arabella. She didn’t want to make her daughter self- conscious or, worse, cause her to start avoiding Matthew altogether.
But Alfred completely missed her tactful intention. Frowning, he looked at them and said, “How come none of you saw it? Did I really read the situation wrong?”
“You definitely misread it. Are you suggesting all three of us are less perceptive than you alone? Let’s get Arabella upstairs so she can rest properly,” Florence said, giving Alfred a pointed look.
“Fine.”
Just then, Ethan walked back in. Seeing Alfred pushing Arabella’s wheelchair, he asked, “Where are you headed?”
“Taking Arabella upstairs to rest,” Alfred replied.
“Is she that tired? She just came down,” Ethan said, shifting his gaze to Arabella.
“I’m actually not tired at all. Are you planning to take me somewhere?” Arabella raised an eyebrow at him.
“Going out is an option, but given your current condition…” Ethan hesitated.
“No going out! Arabella’s injury isn’t fully healed. She’s staying put,” Florence interjected firmly, directing her words at Ethan.
With Florence laying down the law, Ethan didn’t dare argue. He could only look at Arabella and shrug, signaling his helplessness.
Arabella sighed. “Alfred, take me up.”
“Alright.” Alfred wheeled her toward the staircase.
Ethan didn’t follow them this time. Instead, he settled onto the living room sofa to chat with Jonathan.
Having finally gotten Freya admitted and settled at Kindwell Hospital, Carter collapsed into a chair, utterly drained.

Even though the doctor had administered a strong painkiller, Freya could still feel a throbbing ache in her leg and continued to groan miserably.
“That’s enough now. They gave you the pain medication. Just try to bear it. The fracture has been set and casted. If you can get through today, the pain should ease up tomorrow.” Despite his own exhaustion, Carter attempted to soothe her.
“It’s not your leg that’s broken, of course you don’t think it hurts! If I were fine, do you think I’d be lying here carrying on like this?” Freya snapped, her voice still sharp with resentment.
“That Arabella is pure evil! How dare she have her brother break my leg right here at the hospital! They have some nerve.
“Did you call the police?” Freya finally thought to ask.
“When have I had a second to call the police? I’ve been running around filling out your admission forms this whole time,” Carter replied wearily.
“Call them right now. Tell them Arabella assaulted me and broke my leg! Have the police arrest her and lock her up!” Even confined to the bed, Freya was restless, still issuing commands.
“Fine, I’ll call now.” Carter took out his phone and dialed 911.
He then reported the incident, explaining how Freya had sustained her injury.
“What did they say?” Freya asked, watching him.
“They’re going to send an officer to take a statement and assess the situation. Just try to relax,” Carter said, attempting to reassure
her.
Only then did Freya give a grudging nod, but she kept muttering curses about Arabella under her breath.
After a while, she grew tired from the effort. Seeing Carter resting in the chair, she thought of Harper.
“Call Harper right now. Tell her to come to the hospital and keep me company.” In her pain and irritation, Freya didn’t want to look at Carter’s weary face anymore. She wanted someone more pleasant by her side.
Carter looked at her helplessly. “Harper’s barely recovered from the whole ordeal with Dylan’s hand. If you call her over now and she sees you like this, you’ll scare her half to death.”
Listening to Carter, Freya conceded he had a point, but her irritation remained. “Then what do you suggest? Who else is going to come sit with me besides Harper!”
“I’m right here with you. Can’t you just settle down for a bit? Try to get some rest!” Carter’s head was pounding from the constant noise and drama.
At that moment, he deeply wished he could just walk out of the room and find a quiet corner to hide in for a while.
