Chapter 216 Tensions at the Hospital

“Are you getting tired of me? I don’t need you to stay. Just get out!” Freya snapped irritably, trying to wave him away.
Carter knew she was just lashing out. Seeing her in such a pathetic state gave him a certain bitter satisfaction.
But the reality was, Freya controlled the money. No matter how nasty her words got, he couldn’t afford to walk away. Doing so would mean never being allowed back through the doors of the Macdonald home–and he wasn’t ready to lose his meal ticket.
For now, he had to swallow his pride and endure her tyranny, all while quietly gathering his strength.
He swore to himself that one day, he’d make her pay for every bit of this humiliation.
“Okay, okay, my fault. If all this yelling makes your throat dry, just tell me, and I’ll get you some water,” Carter said, opting for the path of least resistance.
Freya finally stopped ordering him to leave, though she still shot him a resentful glare.
“Go find me the best doctor in this hospital right now. That last one was useless. Even with the cast and the painkillers, it hurts like hell. I want a different treatment plan,” Freya demanded through gritted teeth, her face pale with pain.
Carter frowned inwardly. He knew arguing would only make things worse. “Fine. Just wait here. I’ll go find someone.”
“Hurry up!”
With that, Carter dragged his weary body out of the room.
In the hallway, he didn’t head straight for the doctor’s office. Instead, he sank onto a bench along the corridor.
Leaning back, he let out a long, exhausted sigh.
For a moment, the quiet hallway felt like a sanctuary compared to the room.
After a while, he could faintly hear cursing from inside–no doubt Freya was ranting about him again.
After resting for a few minutes, he mustered some energy. Shooting an irritated glance toward the hospital room door, he slowly stood and made his way to the physician’s office.
Carter knocked and entered.
Freya’s attending doctor looked up. “Can I help you?”
“My wife is in a great deal of pain. She asked me to see if there’s anything else that can be done to manage it,” Carter said, forcing politeness.
The doctor frowned slightly. “Didn’t the nurse administer a pain relief injection?”
“She did, but the pain is still severe. Is another injection possible?” Carter asked.
The doctor considered for a moment. “Alright, I’ll authorize one additional dose. You can pick up the medication from the pharmacy and have a nurse administer it.”
“Thank you,” Carter replied before turning to leave.

Chapter 216 Tensions at the Hospital
Out in the hallway, his phone buzzed. He pulled it out and saw Harper’s name.
He answered, “Harper, what is it?”
“Dad, are you with Mom? Why isn’t she answering her phone?” Harper asked.
“She probably didn’t hear it. You can tell me what’s going on,” Carter said.
“Nothing’s wrong–just wanted to check on you guys. Did you see Arabella?” Harper asked, a hint of hope in her voice.
“We did. We stood up for you and gave her a piece of our minds,” Carter lied smoothly.

Given their current predicament, keeping Harper in the dark was the only way to maintain some peace. The Macdonald family was hanging by a thread; they couldn’t afford more drama.
“Really? That’s amazing! I wish I could have been there. I would’ve loved to slap her myself!” Harper’s mood instantly brightened at the thought of Arabella being humiliated.
“Don’t worry–we gave her an earful on your behalf,” Carter assured her.
“Good! So, are you still at the hospital? Should I come meet you?” Harper asked cheerfully.
“You should stay home where it’s safe. That online mess hasn’t completely died down, and we’d worry if you went out alone.”
“Alright, I guess. Come back soon–it’s so boring here by myself,” Harper whined.
“If you’re bored, watch some TV. We’ll be back before you know it,” Carter reassured her.
“Fine. I’ll go find something to watch.”
“Good. If you get hungry, eat something–don’t wait for us,” Carter added.
“Got it. I’ll let you go then,” Harper said before ending the call.
Looking at his phone, Carter finally let out a long sigh of relief.
Thankfully, Harper hadn’t suspected a thing. Explaining Freya’s current situation to her would have been a nightmare.
After collecting the medication from the pharmacy, Carter headed toward the nurses‘ station.
“You two are really something–so clever and entertaining,” Robert said with a beaming smile.
With Naomi and Ruby around, he never had a dull moment.
“You’ve been visiting so often lately–won’t it interfere with your schedules?” Robert asked, looking at them kindly.
“Not at all. We’re on a break from our flight lessons right now, so it’s the perfect chance to spend more time with you. Once classes resume in a few days, we really won’t have the opportunity,” Naomi replied with a warm, affectionate smile.
