“See? Even now, Ryan is sticking up for you. Doesn’t that make you feel the least bit sorry?” Robert said, though his anger had noticeably cooled.
His main reason for coming to apologize was to avoid a rift with the Hamilton family. After so many years of friendship, he really didn’t want to damage their relationship. If the Hamiltons weren’t being too hard on Matthew, then his own irritation naturally eased a bit.
“Ryan, I really am sorry.” Seeing that Ryan didn’t seem too upset about the broken engagement, Matthew began to hope that maybe today they could actually put an end to the arrangement.
“Grandpa, Grandma, we’re here to see you!” Arabella walked in brightly, side by side with Alfred.
Everyone in the living room turned toward the voice.
A moment later, Arabella and Alfred stepped into view.
The instant Matthew and Arabella locked eyes, they both froze.

Alfred gave a polite nod toward Robert. “Robert.”
Robert nodded slightly, his attention completely fixed on Arabella.
“Dr. Macdonald, you two…” Robert looked puzzled, noticing how familiar Arabella seemed with Ryan.

“Your granddaughter! You mean Dr. Macdonald is the real Hamilton heiress you just found?!” Even though Robert heard it clearly, he still couldn’t quite believe it. His eyes swept over Arabella in disbelief.
“That’s right.” Ryan watched Robert’s stunned expression, his own eyes gentle.
Robert turned back to Arabella. “Dr. Macdonald, why didn’t you ever mention any of this before?”
Now that the truth was out, Arabella answered frankly, “I’m sorry, Robert, for not telling you sooner. It’s just… I’ve only been back a short while, and I’m still settling into being a Hamilton. So outside the family…”
Hearing her explanation, Robert realized she was still adjusting. He chuckled warmly and sighed, “I truly never imagined the doctor who’s been treating me all this time was actually the real Hamilton heiress!
“What an incredible turn of events.”
Taking in Arabella’s poised and self–assured demeanor, Robert’s eyes held even greater admiration.
To be so accomplished and also a Hamilton granddaughter—this young woman was truly exceptional.
With that thought, an idea crossed Robert’s mind. Matthew didn’t care for Naomi, but what if he and Arabella were to get to know each other? Perhaps the Stewart–Hamilton alliance could still work out after all.
He then cast a meaningful glance toward Matthew.
Matthew frowned, a faint sense of unease settling over him.
“Arabella, you’re back!” Lena smiled and motioned her over. “Come here, let me look at you. It’s been a while since you visited. Have you been very busy lately? Make sure you’re taking care of yourself and not pushing too hard.”
Lena’s concern and gentle reminders warmed Arabella’s heart. She smiled softly and replied, “I’ve had a lot going on, but it’s nothing I can’t handle. As soon as I had a free moment, I came straight to see you and Grandpa.”
“Good. It’s so wonderful to have you home.” Lena nodded, clearly content.
“Grandpa, Grandma, what’s all this?” Alfred asked, eyeing the array of gifts the Stewarts had brought with curiosity.
He had a feeling Robert and Matthew’s visit, loaded down with presents, wasn’t just a casual drop–in.
“Well, Robert brought Matthew here to discuss calling off the engagement,” Ryan explained, his tone growing more serious.
“Calling off the engagement?” Alfred asked, confused. “You mean Matthew and Naomi’s engagement?”
“Yes.” Ryan felt that, given how things stood, it might really be time to think everything over carefully.
