“Well, at least you can admit that much,” Ruby retorted smugly, but a second after the words left her mouth, she realized their implication.

Her face instantly flushed with anger. “Arabella, are you insulting us?” 

Wasn’t that just another way of calling them slow learners who needed extra practice?

Arabella raised a brow. “Not bad. Looks like you’re finally using your head.”

“You’re the one who- Ugh!” Being mocked so deftly left Ruby sputtering, too furious to form a coherent comeback.

Lucas shook his head slightly. “You might want to quit while you’re behind.”

He genuinely didn’t understand it. Ruby was outmatched by Arabella in every conceivable way, and she lost every verbal exchange, so why did she persistently seek out this self–inflicted humiliation?

“Why should I quit? Why do you always defend her?” Ruby’s eyes grew red with frustration. Why did Lucas show Arabella so much consideration? What was so special about her?

“I’m not defending anyone. I’m just stating the obvious.” If she didn’t want to listen, that was her problem. He wasn’t the one being made a fool of.

Grinding her teeth in irritation, Ruby noticed that both Arabella and Lucas were now looking up, watching Naomi’s plane in the distance, completely ignoring her. She felt a wave of agitated dismissal.

“Hmph, just you wait. Naomi will surpass you,” Ruby shot back defiantly.

When Naomi had picked her up that morning, she’d said she was determined to work hard and prove to everyone that she was

better than Arabella.

“Sure, whatever. I’m getting my license for myself, anyway,” Arabella said with a casual shrug, utterly indifferent.

Ruby felt like she’d just thrown a punch into a soft pillow–all effort, no impact, leaving her even more frustrated and breathless

Hopeless. Lucas thought to himself. There was no point engaging with someone who refused to see reason.

“Let’s go. I’m done for the day,” Arabella said, standing up. She really had no interest in looking at Ruby’s face any longer.

Truthfully, she had covered the planned lesson, so she was ready to head out.

“Running away?” Ruby lifted her chin triumphantly. “Don’t come crying later when you’ve fallen behind”

Arabella gave Ruby a look that plainly said, You are an idiot, then turned and walked away without another word.

Naturally, Lucas wasn’t staying either. He got up to follow.

“Where are you going?” Ruby grabbed his arm.

“My session is over,” Lucas said, gently shaking off her grip as he moved to catch up with Arabella.

Ruby stepped in front of him. “She quit, so you can instruct me now.”

She mostly just didn’t want Lucas to leave. It wasn’t like she hadn’t noticed–Arabella had arrived in Lucas‘ car. She’d seen it clearly from the air earlier.

“You have your own assigned instructor,” Lucas replied, sidestepping her and walking away briskly.

“Hey! Get back here!” Ruby stomped her foot in anger, but Lucas was already gone.

“Ruby, what’s going on?” Naomi asked as she walked over.

Ruby turned and saw her. “Naomi, are you finished with your session?”

“No, just taking a short break.” Actually, she’d seen Arabella leave and came down to see what had happened.

“Oh.” Ruby sat down next to Naomi and launched into her complaint. “It’s Arabella again. She probably got jealous of you and stormed off in a huff. And the second she left, Lucas took off too. I couldn’t even stop him.”

“Arabella left because she was angry?” Naomi sounded skeptical.

“Yeah! I told her your goal was to surpass her. She probably realized she’s not as good as you and got upset,” Ruby said, sounding pleased with herself.

Naomi frowned. “You told her that?”

“Yeah, why? What’s wrong?” Ruby looked confused.

Naomi sighed quietly. “That wasn’t very smart. Why would you say that to her face?”

“Why not? You are better than her,” Ruby insisted proudly.

“I think you might be the only one who still believes that,” Naomi said, a trace of bitterness in her voice.

Ruby tried to comfort her. “Naomi, that’s not true. Everyone knows how capable you are.”

Naomi felt a sharp pang. Who remembered her capabilities now? She had become an afterthought in her own family.

“Never mind. Let’s not talk about it. I’m going back up to practice,” Naomi said, standing up.

This time, she couldn’t afford to lose to Arabella. She had to push herself harder than ever.

“Then I’ll get some more practice in too,” Ruby said, heading toward her own training plane.

Meanwhile, Arabella and Lucas had already left the flight academy.

“Is it possible to reschedule my training slots?” Arabella asked Lucas as they walked to the parking lot.

She really had no desire to share the airfield or the schedule with Naomi and Ruby anymore.

Understanding her perfectly, Lucas nodded. “Of course.”

“Just let me know once it’s arranged,” Arabella said.

Lucas glanced at her. “Will do. I’ll text you the new times.”

“Where would you like me to drop you off?” Lucas asked as they reached his car.

Arabella thought for a moment. “Sunspire District, please.”

“You live in Sunspire District?” Lucas remarked conversationally.

“Mm–hmm,” Arabella replied simply, offering no further details.

Lucas didn’t press the issue and soon drove Arabella to the address she provided.

Looking at the upscale villa, Lucas ventured a casual question. “Is this your place?”

“It’s my brother’s. I’m just stopping by to see him,” Arabella explained as she unbuckled her seatbelt.

“If you don’t live here, how are you getting home later?” Lucas asked, slightly puzzled.

“I live nearby,” Arabella said with a brief smile. “Thanks again for the ride today.”
