Arabella quietly tugged on Lucas‘ sleeve and whispered, “You never told me you had family ties here.”
‘It never came up. I got this job on my own,” Lucas replied, a note of pride in his voice.
Arabella gave him a look that was both amused and exasperated. “With your skills, nobody would doubt that anyway.”
He was genuinely talented, so connections or not, it didn’t really matter.
Lucas scratched the back of his head and grinned. “You really think so?”
‘I’m just stating the facts,” Arabella said with a faint smile.
Watching the two of them chat so easily, Matthew’s expression darkened a shade.
An inexplicable irritation settled over him, and his tone turned more clipped. “Dr. Hamilton, we should continue our discussion about the bid. Shall we go together?”
‘She hasn’t even had lunch yet. You can’t just haul her off for work on an empty stomach,” Lucas shot back, annoyed.
Matthew replied coolly, “I’ll take her to lunch.”
He even added, “We can talk over the meal.”
‘Not necessary. I’ll get lunch with her myself and drop her at your office this afternoon,” Lucas argued.
He simply didn’t want Matthew driving Arabella away.
‘Hey, settle down,” Hank said, pulling Lucas aside. “Mr. Stewart’s time is valuable. Don’t waste it here.”
Turning back to Matthew, he added politely, “Since you have business to attend to, Mr. Stewart, I won’t keep you any longer.”
“Uncle!” Lucas tried to protest, but his uncle held him firmly and warned in a low voice, “Keep this up and I’ll have your father come pick you up. Don’t test me.”
“…” Lucas immediately deflated. The last thing he wanted was to be sent home.
After a brief pause, Arabella spoke up, “Mr. Stewart, lunch isn’t needed. We can discuss things in the car”
By the time they reached the city, they should be done talking. She could just grab a cab home from there.
Matthew gave a slight, noncommittal nod and got into the car.
Arabella looked at Lucas. “Since Mr. Stewart is headed that way anyway, it’s fine. No need for you to make the drive,”
Lucas reluctantly said, “Just… call me if you need anything, okay?”

“Alright, mind your own business for once,” Hank said, shooting Lucas a look. Then, turning to Arabella, his expression softened into a professional smile. “Dr. Hamilton, safe travels. I won’t delay you and Mr. Stewart further.”
Arabella’s lips twitched slightly. “Thank you, sir.”
For some reason, she felt a faint chill. With a final nod, she got into the passenger seat.
As the car began to pull away, Lucas called out, “Arabella! I’ll pick you up tomorrow!”
“What is with you today, kid?” Hank asked, thoroughly perplexed.
Instead of answering, Lucas fired back, “If it’s just about funding, I could help you find investors too. Why did it have to be him?”
‘Quiet. Don’t refer to Mr. Stewart so casually. Show some respect,” Hank scolded.
“What? I’ll call him Matthew if I want. He doesn’t even use my name!” Lucas protested, feeling the criticism was unfair.
‘Are you on his level?” Hank retorted flatly.
Lucas bristled. “How am I not?”
‘He runs Horizon Corp. You’re a flight instructor. You’re not in the same league,” Hank said, nearly rolling his eyes.
‘That’s because I chose a different path. If I went into business, I could be just as good,” Lucas argued stubbornly.
Hank raised an eyebrow. “Is that so? Maybe you should go home and discuss that path with your parents. I’m sure they’d love to hear it.”
Lucas finally caught the implication and his face fell. “Uncle, not this again. I told you, flying is what I love.”
Hank shook his head with a mix of regret and fondness. “If only your parents had had another child. Who’s going to run the family company one day?”
A sudden idea lit up Lucas‘ face. He threw an arm around Hank’s shoulders. “Hey, you know what? You should get married! Have kid–no, have two! Then one of them can take over the business!”
“What kind of nonsense are you talking now?” Hank snapped, shoving Lucas‘ arm off and swatting his shoulder. This kid had some nerve, joking about his love hfe.
“What? It’s a genuine suggestion! You’re not getting any younger, you know,” Lucas pressed, grinning
“Worry about yourself,” Hank muttered, turning and walking away briskly.
Lucas pouted. He hadn’t said anything wrong, had he?
He walked to his own car, and it suddenly hit him–he’d be driving back alone. A hollow, lonely feeling settled in his chest.

“There’s no hurry. We can discuss it over lunch,” Matthew replied calmly.
