“Your presence was critical,” Matthew stated, his gaze steady. “All the technical product explanations required your expertise.”
“I’m not so sure,” she countered. “I think Terry would have signed even if I weren’t here.” It seemed that with Matthew leading the deal, the specifics of what was being sold were almost secondary.
Matthew held his ground. “It was the clarity of your explanations that secured his commitment.”
Arabella couldn’t suppress an eye roll. Yeah, right. Like I’d buy that.
With a sigh, she shifted the topic. “Mr. Stewart, even though you’re an investor in the pharma company, I’d prefer you not to involve yourself in its day–to–day operations. Isn’t managing a conglomerate the size of Horizon Corp enough to keep you occupied?”
The whole situation irritated her. Her attendance today felt utterly superfluous.
Seeing her serious, slightly frosty expression, Matthew’s eyes darkened.
‘Are you really this upset because it interfered with your visit to your lover?” Matthew’s voice was cool.
‘My what?” Arabella corrected, her tone sharp. “We are friends. That’s all.”
Matthew arched a brow. “You certainly show him a particular level of consideration.”
‘He’s ill and vulnerable right now. Of course I’m concerned,” she replied, as if stating the obvious.
‘Is that the only reason?” Matthew pressed further.
‘What other reason could there possibly be?” Arabella frowned, perplexed by his unusual line of questioning today.
Matthew watched her, an inscrutable flicker in his gaze.
‘Let’s go,” he said after a long moment, rising to his feet.
Arabella pressed her lips together, suddenly realizing he’d diverted the conversation. “Don’t change the subject. We were discussing business. What does Lucas have to do with any of this?”
‘It’s irrelevant now,” Matthew said, already moving past her toward the door.
“What?” Arabella was baffled.
What was irrelevant? How could it be?
So, was that a yes or a no to her request?
“Hey, wait!” Arabella hurried after him into the hallway
“Mr. Stewart, did you agree or not-” she began, but as she stepped out, a housekeeping cart came rolling straight toward her
“Oh!”
“Look out!” Instinctively, Matthew reached back, his arm encircling Arabella’s waist and pulling her swiftly against the wall, shielding her with his body.

Her heart pounding, Arabella watched, slightly pale, as the cart continued down the corridor. She let out a quiet sigh of relief. That was close.
“Are you alright?” Matthew’s voice was low, close to her ear.
“I’m fine, thank you. I just-” Arabella started, tilting her head back to look at him.
Oh.
The situation suddenly became acutely awkward.
Good grief, she was practically leaning against Matthew’s chest!
And her hands were clutching fistfuls of his dress shirt!
She instantly let go, straightened up, and took a small step back, her composure slightly ruffled. “I’m okay now. We should go.”
“Wow! Your… business partnership… certainly has a… dynamic way of communicating!” came the heavily accented from a familiar voice. Arabella fought the urge to grimace.
Terry approached, giving Matthew a knowing look. “Wouldn’t you agree, Mr. Stewart?”
“You’re still here?” Matthew replied, his tone flat.
“Just collected my suitcase. Was on my way out. Didn’t expect to witness… this,” Terry said, his amused gaze bouncing between
them.
“Then you’d best be on your way. Flight schedules wait for no one,” Matthew said, his words a clear dismissal.
Terry chuckled. “Right, I’m gone.”
“Wouldn’t dream of… interrupting,” Terry added, then turned to Arabella. “Goodbye, special partner.”
Arabella mustered a tight smile. “Goodbye, Terry.”
“Mr. Stewart, until next time,” Terry said with a final wink before wheeling his luggage away.
“Ahem.” Arabella cleared her throat, the awkwardness hanging in the air. “Mr. Stewart, I’ll be leaving as well”
With that, she quickened her pace and walked off down the hall.
Matthew watched her retreat, a complex emotion flickering briefly in his eyes.
He glanced down. The front of his shirt was still slightly creased where her hands had been, and it seemed to carry a faint, lingering trace of her perfume.
Seeing Matthew standing motionless, Andy ventured softly, “Mr. Stewart, shall we proceed?”
Matthew snapped back to attention, his professional demeanor settling back into place. “Let’s go
Meanwhile, Arabella was already in her car.

She pressed her cool hands against her slightly warm cheeks. It was just an accident. “A reflex. Nothing to overthink.”
Taking a deep, steadying breath, she started the engine and pulled out of the hotel lot.
When her phone rang, she answered via the car’s speaker system. “Yes?”

“The invitation from the Peterson family has been declined, as you instructed,” Colton reported. “I expect they’ll have no choice but to contact you directly now.”
“Understood,” Arabella replied.
“Alright. Keep me posted if anything develops.”
“Will do.”
After ending the call, a slight smile touched Arabella’s lips. She turned the steering wheel, changing her route toward the hospital.
A short while later, Arabella arrived at Lucas‘ hospital room.
‘How are you feeling today?” she asked, her tone gentle with concern.
‘Much better, honestly,” Lucas replied with a warm smile, though his eyes unconsciously scanned her hands and the nearby chair, ooking for a telltale insulated bag. A hint of disappointment shadowed his features when he didn’t find one.
Noticing the subtle shift, Arabella asked, “Is everything okay?”
‘It’s nothing,” Lucas said, quickly brightening his expression again. “I thought you weren’t coming until this afternoon? Did your work wrap up early?”
It did. Just had a contract signing. It went smoothly, so I came straight over,” Arabella explained, taking a seat beside the bed. Lucas‘ grin returned, full of admiration. “You’re incredible, as always. Wrapping up major deals before lunch.”
